About the Tour:
The Jewish Quarter of Venice’s Cannaregio district is one of the most fascinating neighborhoods in the city—and considered by locals to be one of the most authentic. Wandering among its beautifully preserved streets and canals, and stopping along the way for sips and light bites at its romantic wine bars, is delicious way to learn about the area’s distinctive history. Accompanying your extra-small group (with
a maximum of 12 people) will be an expert, English-speaking guide, whose knowledge illuminates the culture and stories behind this enclave.

What We Love About This Tour:
  • Getting away from crowds to explore some of the prettiest and most peaceful streets and canals in Venice
  • Learning about the neighborhood’s traditional Jewish culture, which still thrives today
  • Sampling delicious wine and cicchetti—small-plate-specialties—among locals in the area’s bàcari (wine bars).

Testimonial:

“Our wonderful guide shared thoughtful insights on the rich history of Cannareggio and the Jewish Ghetto, and also kept the tour upbeat and fun. It was the perfect start to our stay in Venice.”

Tour Itinerary:

After meeting with your group at 6:00 p.m. at the Ponte delle Guglie—one of the bridges spanning the Cannaregio Canal—your guide will lead you on a walking exploration of the Jewish Quarter, whose streets, homes, and canals are some of the most tranquil in the city. You’ll learn about the area’s history as a Jewish ghetto between the 16th and 18th centuries (and served as backdrop for Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice); you’ll also take in historic landmarks like the Campiello delle Scuole (a small plaza surrounded by top-floor synagogues, and see signs of how the Jewish community continues to thrive here (like Judaica shops and kosher eateries).
Punctuating your walking tour will be visits to three of the neighborhood’s atmospheric bàcari (wine bars), where you’ll settle in among
neighborhood locals to sample cicchetti—small-plate-specialties like bruschetta and fried meatballs—paired with small glasses of wine.
